I have been talking a lot lately to the people in my world about the idea of wintering.
We were meant to live inside the rhythms of the world around us—not inside schedules that create dissonance with them.
And yet, so much of modern productivity asks us to do exactly that.
We’re taught to create schedules and definitions of success that have nothing to do with where we actually are—seasonally, emotionally, hormonally, spiritually. As if our bodies don’t notice the shortening days. As if our nervous systems don’t feel the cold, the darkness, the slowing. As if winter is something to conquer instead of something to honor.
But our bodies sense everything.
They register the need to turn inward on cool, brisk days.
They feel the call to rest, to wait, to conserve.
They know when it is not time yet for flowering and creating—but rather for nourishing and resting.
My personal winter is not a failure of motivation.
It’s a biological invitation to nourish instead of push.
To tend instead of produce.
To listen, to sit, to rest.
When we try to force spring before it arrives, we don’t actually become more productive. We become more anxious. More frustrated. More disconnected from ourselves. At least, that’s what happens for me.
The earth doesn’t bloom out of season.
And I trust that my own systems are restoring themselves—healing, recalibrating, getting ready to grow and flourish.
So right now, I nourish so that I can thrive.
Wintering is preparing the soil.
And for me, nourishment looks like whole food, gentleness, margin in my days, more sleep, and slower mornings.
So if you are feeling restless, behind, or panicked that you should be “doing more,” ask yourself:
Am I trying to live in a season I’m not actually in…yet?
What if your body—your life—is already in harmony with its ideal timing?
